Born Drucilla Renae Griffin on February 19, 1988, Dru was the second of four children in the Griffin family. She has an older brother named Jason, a younger brother named KJ, and a younger sister named Norah. Of all her siblings, Dru has always been the closest to KJ due in part to the fact they are the closest in age and have the most in common. She and her siblings were raised in a strict religious household, and until she was 14 or 15 years old Dru never gave her parents any trouble at all.
As a young child, she was very shy and found it hard to make very many friends. She was, however, able to make a few close friends which she was very happy about and is still friends with many of them to this day. When she was three years old, her mother enrolled her in dance classes at the local dance studio. She fell in love with it from the very beginning and very early on showed great potential and skill. Her main focus has always been on contemporary, but she loves to dabble in other styles especially contemporary. She is now a very accomplished and award winning dancer and teaches at the studio where she took classes for many years.
Around the time she turned 15, she started rebelling against her parents' strict rules. It started out as small things like pretending to be sick to avoid having to attend church services with her family. That eventually turned into outright refusal when her parents tried to have her come with them. By the time her sixteenth birthday rolled around, she was very much a different person. She was more outgoing, but at the same time she got in with a bad crowd. She was constantly sneaking out of the house to be with one guy or another and to party. She was even constantly sneaking guys into her bedroom. I will leave it up to your imagination as to what went down those nights. No matter what went down when she was not in a relationship, the few times she actually had a boyfriend she was faithful to them. No matter how much partying she would do she never drank or did any type of drugs outside of smoking cigarettes.
Less than six months after her eighteenth birthday, Dru's parents were tragically killed in a car accident. That really hit her hard since she had treated them so badly for the last few years, and she had been at constant odds with them. Still to this day, two years later, she regrets that she was never able to apologize to them for the way she acted, and now that she has cleaned up her act she hopes that they are up in heaven smiling down on her proudly. She was able to repair the rift that had formed between her and Jason, and their parents death brought them closer together.
She typically was attracted to the bad boys; guys that had tattoos and piercings. The ones that ran in the same circles than she had started running in. Then one day at the studio, she met Aleks Smirnoff. She had heard a good bit about him since his sister and her brother,KJ, had been best friends for years. Aleks was the exact opposite of the type of guys she typically dated or hooked up with, but there was just something about him that caught her attention and drew her to him.
She was very nervous about approaching him at first. She had developed quite the reputation for herself, and to say it was not a good one would be an understatement to say the least. Aleks would have had to have been living under a rock to know about every little detail of her past. When she finally did get the guts to approach him, they really hit it off from the very beginning. He did indeed know of her past, but it didn't make a difference to him. He saw past all of that and actually gave her chance. She found it very easy to open her heart up to him. Aleks brought out the best in Dru. He had this way about him that made her strive to be a better person. The old Dru started coming back out at least personality wise. It was so easy for her to fall in love with him, and it happened so quick it scared her at first. Eventually, she realized it all felt right so she stopped fighting her feelings.
They were going strong for around a year when they found out that Aleks's dad was being transfer to Toronto by his job. The news hit them both very hard, and as hard as it was they both knew that breaking up was the best thing for both of them. The night before he left, they spent what they figured would be one final romantic night together. Two or three months later, Dru learned the true implications of that one night together..She found out that she was pregnant. That really scared her to say the least. She was nineteen years old and was pregnant by the one and only person she has ever been in love with.
She was absolutely terrified to tell anyone at all especially Aleks and her older brother who she feared would want to kill Aleks. She had this irrational fear that Aleks wouldn't believe that the baby was his. Not to mention the fact that they had barely talked after he moved to Toronto. The one person she knew for sure that she could confide in and trust was KJ, and he was the only one that knew for over a month. She did eventually tell Jason and he was very supportive of her and did everything he could to help. Her little girl Renae was born on May 25th 2008 and Dru would do everything in her power to make sure she feels safe, happy and loved.
When Renae was about two months old, Dru received word that Aleks had moved back into town. Although she was a bit scared and nervous about telling him that he was a father, she knew she had to do this for Renae. Thankfully, he was very supportive and accepted the little girl completely with his entire heart. The two did get back together and were married on March 28th 2009 in front of their family and friends. Dru loves being married, and everyday she is thankful that Aleks is such a good husband and father.
With Aleks's support, Dru decided to re-enter college. True, she is a fantastic dancer, but she knows that unless you are absolutely brilliant and have a little bit of luck, you won't make it very far with just that type of career. She is currently an elementary education major with a psychology minor at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She has always enjoyed being around children, and she knows that being an elementary school teacher is exactly what she wants to do with her life. |
